A bovine teat papilloma specimen harboring Deltapapillomavirus (BPV-1) and Xipapillomavirus (BPV-6) representatives BABT
Claus,Marlise Pompeo; Lunardi,Michele; Alfieri,Amauri Alcindo; Otonel,Rodrigo Alejandro Arellano; Ferracin,Lara Munique; Fungaro,Maria Helena Pelegrinelli; Alfieri,Alice Fernandes.
The common occurrence of multiple papillomavirus infections has been shown in several studies involving the human host. However, investigations with the aim of identifying mixed papillomavirus infections in cattle have been conducted only recently. In the current work we describe a co-infection with two different bovine papillomavirus (BPV) types that was identified in a bovine teat papilloma. The skin wart was obtained from a cow belonging to a Brazilian beef herd. A PCR assay was carried out with the FAP primer pair, which amplifies a partial segment of the L1 gene (approximately 478 bp), and the amplicon was submitted to direct sequencing. Because nucleotide sequences with satisfactory quality scores were not obtained, the amplicon was cloned and...

A bumblefoot outbreak and fatal septicemia in captive aquatic birds in Brazil Ciência Rural
Marques,Marcus Vinícius Romero; Resende,José Sérgio de; Donatti,Rogério Venâncio; Vilela,Daniel Ambrózio da Rocha; Ecco,Roselene; Martins,Nelson Rodrigo da Silva.
A bumblefoot outbreak with different prognosis according to host species was studied in captive aquatic avian species. Six wood ducks (Aix sponsa), three scarlet-ibis (Eudocimus ruber), two black-swans (Cygnus atratus), five white-faced ducks (Dendrocygna viduata) and two roseate spoonbills (Platalea ajaja) were kept in a common pen with abrasive pavement pond margin, predisposing to podal skin wear. Incoordination and mortality occurred in the two roseate spoonbils and one black swan. Coagulase-positive penicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from the synovial fluid and from the liver. All birds sharing the pen presented active or cicatricial foot lesions, indicating a possible challenge to the environmental Staphylococci. However, except...

A calibrated agricultural water demand model for three regions in northern Baja California Agrociencia
Medellín-Azuara,Josué; Howitt,Richard E.; Waller-Barrera,Cynthia; Mendoza-Espinosa,Leopoldo G.; Lund,Jay R.; Taylor,Joseph E..
Irrigated agriculture is the largest water user in many regions, and agricultural water use efficiency and consumption has been studied by several authors. This paper provides a framework and application of economic valuation of water for agriculture in three regions in northern Baja California, Mexico, namely Guadalupe, Maneadero and Mexicali Valleys. Positive mathematical programming (PMP), a deductive valuation technique, was the framework used for this estimation using water delivery data reported by the National Water Commission in Mexicali, production costs and cultivated area, production factors use from the Agriculture Ministry (SAGARPA); and other data from previous studies. Analysis of the results shows that marginal economic water value in...

A Case of Unusual Anatomy: Maxillary Central Incisor with Two Root Canals International Journal of Morphology
Rodrigues,Evaldo Almeida; Silva,Sílvio José Albergaria da.
Success in root canal treatment is achieved after thorough cleaning and shaping followed by complete obturation of the canal system. Therefore, endodontic therapy requires specific and complete knowledge of the internal and external dental anatomy, and its variations in presentation. Such treatment may be performed in root canal systems that do not comply with the normal anatomical features described in standard textbooks. The internal anatomy of the maxillary central incisor is well known and usually presents one root canal system. This case report describes an endodontic retreatment of a maxillary central incisor with two canal systems.

A Century of Synthetic Fertilizer: 1909-2009 Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
This year marks a centenary of the synthetic fertilizer industry. German chemists, Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch, in 1909 demonstrated their industrial process for the manufacture of ammonia. The achievement won them accolades including Nobel Prizes. The output of their Haber-Bosch process can be used for either peace or war, agriculture or munitions, and the rapid adoption by Germany of this industrial process is credited with prolonging WW1. Most of the synthetic nitrogenous fertilizer of the past century, and right up to the present, has been manufactured using the Haber-Bosch process. The use of synthetic fertilizers has led to significant negative environmental outcomes. Rudolf Steiner was an early voice against chemical agriculture. Steiner's...

A choice experiment method to assess vegetables producers’ preferences for crop insurance AgEcon
Mercade, Lluc; Gil, Jose Maria; Kallas, Zein; Serra, Jordi.
Agricultural producers face many risks in their economic activity due to weather conditions, plant or animal diseases, price volatility, policy changes and so on. One of the management tools to deal with some of these risks is the crop insurance system. In Catalonia (North-East of Spain) farmers’ participation in crop insurance for vegetables is low. Only 5 percent of the vegetables area is insured, when in Spain, as a whole, this percentage is around 20 percent. Different reasons have been suggested to explain this low participation ratio such as low risk perception, risk diversification, insurance cost or crop damage assessment rules, among others. However, no systematic research has been undertaken to assess farmers’ preferences for crop insurance in...

A Choice Modelling Survey of Community Attitudes to Improvements in Environmental Quality in NSW Catchments AgEcon
Mazur, Kasia; Bennett, Jeffrey W..
The survey was designed to estimate environmental values suitable for integration into MOSAIC, a bio-economic model for catchment and farm level planning. Local residents, as well as distant rural and distant urban communities, were surveyed in three NSW catchments (Lachlan, Namoi and Hawkesbury-Nepean) using choice modelling (CM). The survey aimed to find out respondents’ attitudes about, and preferences for, potential natural resource management (NRM) improvements. In total, 3,997 responses were collected from seven different locations in NSW. Fourteen split samples were established to allow for testing of incentive compatibility in CM, the impact of respondent location on values held, and scale effects. This research report describes the development...

A cognitive psychological approach of analyzing preference uncertainty in contingent valuation AgEcon
Akter, Sonia; Bennett, Jeffrey W..
The sources of preference uncertainty in contingent valuation (CV) studies have rarely been investigated from a theoretical standpoint. This paper proposes a holistic theoretical framework of preference uncertainty that combines microeconomic theory with the theories of cognitive psychology. Empirical testing of the proposed theoretical model was carried out in Australia in the context of a national ‘Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS)’ to be introduced in 2010. Two separate ordered probit models for a certainty score associated with CV ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ responses were estimated. The results of the estimated regression models provide evidence supporting the hypotheses drawn from the theoretical model.

A comparative assessment of octanol-water partitioning and distribution constant estimation methods for perfluoroalkyl carboxylates and sulfonates Nature Precedings
Sierra Rayne; Kaya Forest.
New experimental data is available in the literature regarding the octanol-water distribution behavior of representative straight chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylate (PFCA) and sulfonate (PFSA) congeners. The current study provides the first investigation into the predictive ability of various software programs for estimating the corresponding octanol-water partitioning (log P) and distribution (log D) constants of PFCAs and PFSAs. Wide predictive variation was found within and between the various methods. Several programs were able to accurately estimate the log P/D fragmental contributions of a -CF~2~- group for PFCAs, as well as the associated Gibbs free energies for partitioning into octanol from water due to the hydrophobic character of the...

A comparative efficiency analysis of wheat farms using parametric and nonparametric methods AgEcon
Mo, Lijia.
This study examined whether the efficiency measures were invariant to choice of parametric and nonparametric methods for a sample of 183 wheat farms. The efficiency measures from the deterministic parametric method were smaller than those from the deterministic method. There was a trade-off between scale efficiency and economic efficiency. In the deterministic nonparametric method, the economic efficiency, scale efficiency and overall efficiency results were invariant to the number of inputs or the dimensionality. Only allocative and pure technical efficiency measures depended on the dimensionality. This work illustrated the importance of holding curvature for the cost function in stochastic frontier results.

This study assessed the micro anatomical differences in the tongue of rat, bat and pangolin with a view to establishing the functional anatomical differences of these mammalian tongues on their dietary pattern. Ten rats, ten bats and ten pangolins were used for this study. The animals were sacrificed and the tongue excised and processed for light microscopical study adopting the following stains: Haematoxylin Eosin, Verhoeff Gieson and Masson trichrome. The results showed non papillation of the keratinized stratified epithelium of pangolin tongue unlike the papillation seen in the tongue of the rat and bat. While the filiform papillation seen in the rat was bristle like, the filiform papillae in the bat were crown-like. There was also an unusual dense...

A comparative review of the fisheries resource management systems in New Zealand and in the European Union ArchiMer
Marchal, Paul; Lallemand, Philippe; Stokes, Kevin; Thebaud, Olivier.
This review aims at comparing the fisheries management systems existing in New Zealand and in the European Union. The involvement of stakeholders at all stages of the management process is generally more transparent and better established in New Zealand than in the EU. Both systems aim at achieving an adequate balance between sustainability and utilisation and consider the precautionary approach as a founding principle. The social objectives are probably more explicit in the EU management system. In New Zealand, B-MSY is a legal management target for all stocks in the quota management system (QMS), but management strategies were poorly explicit until most recently. In the EU, there have not been any legal management targets or strategies until 1999. Since...
